AI trust: set the rules before your team relies on AI
Last updated
For a small business, AI trust comes down to one question for each task: how much checking does an AI result need before you use it? Write down which tasks AI may help with, who checks the output, and what proof is needed before anyone uses it. Then widen the work only as the checks keep passing.
What does AI trust mean for a small business?
It means knowing, for each task, how much checking an AI result needs before you use it. Set that level per task, not for the tool as a whole.
| Task kind | How much to check | Who checks |
|---|---|---|
| Internal notes and summaries | Read against the source | The person who uses it |
| Drafts for customers | Every claim, name and link | A named reviewer |
| Anything with prices, dates or rules | Each figure against a record you trust | A named reviewer, then an approver |
| Actions like sending or changing records | Approval before each action | The owner or a manager |

Some claims need more care than others. Use the draft claim check for claims that may be made up.
How do you build trust in AI work?
Start small, check every result, and widen the task only when the checks keep passing. Use these steps.
- Pick one task. Start with a draft or a summary.
- Write the check. Say what "right" looks like for that task.
- Keep a short log. Note each result, what you fixed and why.
- Look at the log after a few rounds. Are the same fixes coming up?
- Change the instructions. Fix the cause, then run it again.
- Widen only on a clean log. Add a little more work at a time.
Take BreadHead's free AI Honesty Test: six questions you ask inside the AI you already use. A 5-part email series comes with it.
Who should check AI work in your business?
A named person for each task, who knows the work well enough to spot a wrong answer. Write their name next to the task.
Use this check:
- Does the checker know the subject?
- Do they have the source or record to compare against?
- Do they have time to check before the work is used?
- Is a second person named for anything that goes public?
With BreadHead, you review and approve the work before it goes public or into use.
Start the first task as a small trial. Write its review test on the pilot acceptance sheet.
